Didactic scheme of the master’s program
The Masters Course in Communication must be completed, including the dissertation defense, in at least 12 and at most 24 months.
The Master Course requires the minimum fulfillment of 24 (twenty-four) credits, distributed as follows:
1. a. 12 (twelve) in compulsory subjects;
2. b. 12 (twelve) in optional subjects.
At least fifty percent (50%) of credits in optional subjects must be fulfilled in the Program.
The Master of Communication course curriculum includes subjects in:
1. concentration area, consisting of compulsory and optional subjects of the Postgraduate Program in Communication;
2. related domain area, consisting of subjects from other programs, considered appropriate to the student’s study regime, selected in agreement with the advisor.
Credits regarding the optional subjects may be replaced by up to four (4) credits as long as the student achieves the following activities during the period of enrollment in the Program:
1. a full-length work, authored alone or co-authored with advisor, published in a national or international magazine with ‘Qualis’ classification, up to two credits;
2. a book chapter of recognized merit in the field of knowledge, up to two credits;
3. book of recognized merit in the field of knowledge, up to four credits;
4. publication of a complete work in cannals of scientific events, up to one credit.
Credit substitution will be based on an individual examination by the CPG, which will take into consideration the relationship between the activities performed and the dissertation project proposed by the applicant.
The master student is required to attend 4 (four) defenses that may be qualifying (master and doctorate), dissertation or thesis throughout the course.
The subject “Defense of Dissertation Research Project” (uncredited) is compulsory for the Master Course and must be completed by the end of the 2nd semester.
In the semesters in which the student dedicates himself to the elaboration of his master’s dissertation, he must enroll in: Final Project (uncredited).
Requirements to obtain the Master of Communication Diploma:
1. the fulfillment of credits;
2. the publication of an article related to the dissertation theme, co-authored with the advisor, in a scientific journal classified in the Qualis of the Communication area and CAPES information;
The Examining Committee will be chaired by the non-judgmental advisor, composed of two other full members, at least one of them not linked to the Program, and one alternate, and will be approved by the Graduate Program Committee.
Didactic scheme of the PhD program
The PhD program in Communication must be completed, including the thesis defense, in at least 24 and at most 48 months.
Exceptionally, upon presentation of widely justified reasons and a schedule indicating the feasibility of completion of the work, this period may be extended by up to twelve months, after approval by the Posgraduate Program Commission.
ThePhD program requires the completion of a minimum of 32 (thirty-two) credits, approved and distributed as follows:
1. 16 (sixteen) in compulsory subjects;
2. 16 (sixteen) in optional subjects.
At least fifty percent (50%) of credits in optional subjects must be fulfilled in the Postgraduate Program in Communication / UnB.
Students may pursue related domain credits, which include all subjects of the Posgraduate Programs of the University of Brasilia, as well as their equivalents in other universities, at CPG’s discretion.
Credits for optional subjects may be replaced by up to six (6) special credits provided the student performs the following activities during the program period:
1. full-length work, authored alone or co-authored with advisor, published in national or international magazine with ‘Qualis’ classification, up to two credits;
2. book chapter of recognized merit in the field of knowledge, up to two credits;
3. book of recognized merit in the field of knowledge, up to four credits;
4. publication of complete work in annals of scientific events, even a credit.
Credit substitution will be based on an individual examination by the CPG, which will take into consideration the relationship between the activities performed and the dissertation project proposed by the applicant.
The doctoral student is required to attend 4 (four) defenses that may be qualifying (masters and doctorate), dissertation or thesis throughout the course.
In the semesters in which the student dedicates to the preparation of his doctoral thesis, he must enroll in Final Work Preparation (uncredited).
The Qualification Exam for the PhD program is mandatory and must be taken by the end of the 4th semester.
The student will defend his Thesis Project an Examining Board, the same should include: characterization of the study theme, problematic definition, theoretical framework, working hypothesis (when applicable), description of the methodology to be used and proposal of a chapter.
The examining board is appointed by CPPG and consists of the student’s mentor teacher and two other PhD or Notorious Professor teachers.
The chair of the examining board will be the responsibility of the supervising professor.
The composition of the examining board must have the participation of a teacher from outside the Posgraduate Program.
Requirements to obtain the PhD in Communication Diploma:
1. the fulfillment of credits;
2. Publication, in a scientific journal classified by Qualis of the Communication and Information Area of CAPES, of two articles by the author alone or in co-authorship with the advisor, related to the thesis theme, prior to the thesis defense date.
The Doctoral Thesis Examining Committee will be chaired by the non-judgmental supervising professor, composed of three other full members and one alternate. Among the full members, one must be linked to the Posgraduate Program and the others, external, at least one of them not linked to the University of Brasilia.
Settlement of credit
Studies related to courses taken with approval may be used in stricto sensu postgraduate courses conducted in a Brazilian or a foreign institutions, up to the limit of 40% (forty percent) of the credits required for the Master and 50% (fifty percent) of those required for the Doctorate, upon CPPG analysis.
The usage of the studies will be based on an individualized examination, which will take into account the relationship between the objectives of the dissertation project and/or thesis proposed by the applicant and his previous training.
The use of studies will be carried out from a report proposed by the advisor, who will submit it to the CPPG.
The course taken with content equal to or equivalent to the “Research Methodology” subject offered by the Posgraduate Program will not be subject to achievement.
In case of approval for re-entry in the Master and Doctorate courses, students may reuse the subjects already approved, except for “Research Methodology”, upon CPPG recognition, within a maximum interval of five (5) years, in line with the higher standards in force.
